England Flag being removed

I keep adding the England flag to the English Language page, but for some reason it keeps getting taken away! Why shouldn't the England flag be added to the page about the English language? Thank you! --Camaeron (talk) 14:47, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

"Transport in" and "Geography of" categories

I proposed that the "Transport in" categories e.g. Category:Transport in Kent should be placed within the relevant "Geography of" e.g. Category:Geography of Kent. Any objection? Fayenatic london (talk) 12:13, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

Selected bio

I think it would be a good idea to have a selected bio, I've seen it on a number of portals, and it might be a good idea to show off some promenant English people - it would obviously be as well as a selected bio and could be changed each month. The only problem is, we'll need one more thing to even the sections up, I'm currently thinking of what we could use. Ryan Postlethwaite 18:22, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Copy editing

It might be a good idea to get a copy editor to look over upcoming articles before they appear. Several of the February set were riddled with typos or poor writing, which I've attempted to improve. Espresso Addict (talk) 15:36, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

I don't understand. Which shortcut are you referring too? P:ENG and P:ENGLAND both redirect to this portal, and I can't say I know of any other existing ones. Qst (talk) 19:13, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Month/Year Portal articles et al

I'm English, live in England, blah blah blah...I've designed one or two Portals, by now, but I'd like the designers/Project members to consider re-evaluating having to update the boxes every month!? I've just logged on to see loads missing on this months Portal due to lack of content! Are you Guys serious? This is an unsustainable concept! Their are other ways. One could redesign the Portal and it's sub's to make life a lot easier. I'm more than happy to help - if the motive is there.

I may be a local but to take on the nations portal and ALL it's 50-ish sub-portals is a hell of a lot of work guys. I'm hard working, but I say it as I see it. Wiki User 68 (talk) 22:00, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Education

I put a several links into my site on 11+ news and corrected the figure on the List of grammar schools in England as it is so out of date it is ridiculous! It is 174 not 164. I also put details into each Local Authority page so that people would be able to get the latest details but I got these messages back:

Wiki needs updating on these details,it is incorrect, 10 schools have not been included. Rather than just removing the links they should have updated the pages.

It is a shame as they could just have asked if I minded updating the pages, I spend at least an hour a day searching for 11+ News and spent a week creating the list of schools. Can somebody correct this number and details please.

Category:Market towns in England

Could someone explain to me what is the use of this category. Multiple articles have been deleted from their natural category Towns of.., and put in this unnatural subcat. Take for example Greater Manchester- town boundaries have moved- towns are now in Metropolitan Boroughs and the present settlement is a Town in .. , and as an interesting fact, a small part of it or neighbouring settlement had a medieval right. Take City of Rochester, in Medway, Ceremonial Kent. Rochester lost its city status in the last LG reorganisation-- so with it its market right-- and does anyone care about the market rights? Was there any discussion on the talk page? Can we have a mass reversion please --ClemRutter (talk) 19:30, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

In each case Category:Towns in X is a parent of Category:Market towns in X, so each article is still within the larger parent category, albeit via a subcategory. I have no objection to the articles being categorised twice if that is what others think is the best structure. MRSC (talk) 13:11, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

These Market Towns should also be allocated to Category:Towns in X as the subcat you have created for Market Towns is what WP:SUBCAT calls a distinguished category i.e. the subcategory which is not one of two or more subcategories that allow allocation of all the members of the parent category to their appropriate subcategory. I've added the relevant original category Category:Towns in X to all of the articles in subcategories of Category:Market towns in England, so each article is now categorised twice within the structure. MRSC (talk) 09:58, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

Prehistoric occupation

The portal states: "England has been settled by humans of various cultures for over 29,000 years". This is misleading on two counts. It suggests that there is significance in a figure of 29,000 years, but England has been periodically occupied by various species of homo for over 800,000 years and by modern humans for over 40,000 years (see Prehistoric Britain). It also implies continuous occupation for the last 29,000 years, whereas there were certainly no people during the Last Glacial Maximum 20,000 years ago, and very probably none during the Younger Dryas, a cold period 12,000 years ago. I would suggest: "England has been periodically occupied by various species of human for over 800,000 years, but continuous occupation dates to the end of the last ice age around 11,000 years ago." 750th anniversary of De Montfort's Parliament

20th January 2015 is the 750th anniversary of the first English Parliament.[1] The article De Montfort's Parliament is being improved and further contributions would be welcome and beneficial to work it towards GA.
