Un municipio es un tipo de municipio de la provincia canadiense de Ontario . Pueden tener un estado de un solo nivel o un estado de nivel inferior.

Ontario tiene 200 municipios que tenían una población acumulada de 990,396 y una población promedio de 4,952 en el censo de 2011 . Los municipios más grandes y más pequeños de Ontario son Centre Wellington y Cockburn Island con poblaciones de 26.693 y 0, respectivamente.

Historia

En virtud de la anterior Ley Municipal de 1990 , un municipio era un tipo de municipio local. Según esta legislación anterior, una localidad con una población de 1.000 o más podría haber sido incorporada como municipio por la Junta Municipal de Ontario tras la revisión de una solicitud de 75 o más residentes de la localidad. También dispuso que un municipio podría incluir "una unión de municipios y un municipio compuesto por dos o más municipios".

En la transición a la Ley Municipal de 2001 , se abandonaron estos requisitos y, al 31 de diciembre de 2002, todos los municipios que:

  • "existió y formó parte de un condado, un municipio regional o de distrito o el condado de Oxford para fines municipales" se convirtió en un municipio de nivel inferior pero conservó su nombre como municipio; y
  • "existía y no formaba parte de un condado, un municipio regional o de distrito o el condado de Oxford para fines municipales" se convirtió en un municipio de un solo nivel pero conservó su nombre como municipio.

La legislación actual también otorga a los municipios inferiores y de un solo nivel la autoridad para autodenominarse "municipios" u otros antiguos tipos de estatutos municipales, como " ciudades ", " pueblos " o " aldeas ", o genéricamente como "municipios".
