La temporada 1986-1987 fue la 95ª temporada en la existencia del Liverpool FC , y su 25º año consecutivo en la máxima categoría, y cubrió el período comprendido entre el 1 de julio de 1986 y el 30 de junio de 1987.

Era su segunda temporada bajo la dirección de Kenny Dalglish , y como defensores de los dobles ganadores terminaron esta temporada sin trofeos, acercándose a la medalla de plata como subcampeones de la liga y perdiendo finalistas en la Copa de la Liga. Terminaron subcampeones en la liga nueve puntos detrás de sus rivales locales Everton, después de una carrera por el título agitada que los había visto pelear con un resurgimiento del Arsenal y el Tottenham Hotspur, así como enfrentar desafíos sorpresa durante la temporada de equipos poco atractivos como Norwich City, Luton. Town y Wimbledon recién ascendido.

Al final de la temporada, el delantero Ian Rush se dirigió a Italia para fichar por la Juventus . Su sucesor en el ataque del Liverpool, John Aldridge , había sido fichado durante la temporada procedente del Oxford United. Después de que terminó la temporada, Dalglish mejoró aún más las posiciones de delantero del Liverpool con un movimiento para el delantero del Newcastle United Peter Beardsley y el extremo del Watford John Barnes .
